A clear look at your liver in about ten minutes

Your liver rarely complains until late. FibroScan lets you check early: a painless, non-invasive scan with no needles, no sedation and no downtime that measures liver stiffness and liver fat in about ten minutes.

No referral is needed. You can simply decide to know, and book.

Who should consider a FibroScan

The scan is particularly worthwhile if you have been told you have a fatty liver, live with type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol, carry weight around the middle, drink alcohol regularly, have raised liver enzymes on blood work, or have a history of hepatitis.

What the scan measures

Liver stiffness

The liver stiffness measurement, in kilopascals, reflects fibrosis: the scarring that advancing liver disease leaves behind.

Liver fat (CAP score)

The CAP score estimates the amount of fat in the liver, the hallmark of fatty liver disease, one of the most common liver conditions in Canada.

How it compares with ultrasound and biopsy

A standard ultrasound shows structure but cannot reliably quantify fibrosis or fat. A biopsy quantifies both but is invasive. FibroScan sits in between: measured, validated and non-invasive.

Your FibroScan appointment, step by step

How to prepare

Do not eat for three hours before your appointment; water is fine. Wear something comfortable that gives easy access to your right side.

During the scan

You lie comfortably on your back while the probe rests against your right side. Most people describe each reading as a gentle tap. The scan takes about ten minutes, and you can drive and return to work afterwards.

Reviewing your results

Your results are reviewed with you by a clinician who explains what your numbers mean, can order follow-up blood work, builds a plan around nutrition, weight and metabolic health, arranges a repeat scan to track change and refers you to a specialist if your scores call for it.

Understanding your FibroScan results

You receive two numbers: liver stiffness in kilopascals, which reflects scarring, and a CAP score, which estimates liver fat. Your clinician explains both against reference ranges and what they mean alongside your blood work.

What happens after the scan

Who often books a scan

People with fatty liver on ultrasound, raised liver enzymes, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, regular alcohol use or a history of hepatitis often book a FibroScan to understand their liver health.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a FibroScan cost at AuraWell?

A FibroScan assessment is $145, including a review of your results with a clinician.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No referral is required.

What do my results mean?

You receive a liver stiffness measurement in kilopascals, which reflects fibrosis, and a CAP score, which estimates liver fat. Your clinician explains both against established reference ranges and what, if anything, should happen next.

How do I prepare, and how long does it take?

Do not eat for three hours before your appointment; water is fine. The scan takes about ten minutes, is painless, and you can drive and return to work afterwards.

How is FibroScan different from an ultrasound or biopsy?

A standard ultrasound shows structure but cannot reliably quantify fibrosis or fat. A biopsy quantifies both but is invasive. FibroScan is measured, validated and non-invasive.

Who should consider a liver scan?

People told they have a fatty liver, people living with type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol, those who drink alcohol regularly, anyone with raised liver enzymes on blood work and people with a history of hepatitis.

Should I bring previous test results?

Yes. Recent liver blood tests or ultrasound reports help your clinician interpret your FibroScan results in context.
